What Is Dyslexia and How Common Is It?

Dyslexia is a learning disorder that affects a child’s ability to read, identify and manipulate the sounds in language. Children with this disorder usually find it difficult to recognize new words, or break them down into smaller chunks that they can pronounce. Dyslexia is the most common cause of difficulty with reading, writing, and spelling. Most children with this disorder usually compensate by memorizing words. However, they may still experience difficulties identifying new words and may be slow in recollecting even familiar ones.

Studies show that as many as one in five children have dyslexia, and that about 80-90% of children with learning disorders [1] have it. In most cases, children with dyslexia go undiagnosed because problems in school are mistaken for lack of intelligence, level of effort, or environmental factors. Scientists used to believe that dyslexia was more common in boys than in girls. However, recent studies showed that it affects both boys and girls equally.
