Common Causes of Memory Loss

Memory loss, which is also known as amnesia, is the inability to remember past events for a period. It is a degree of forgetfulness that is abnormal and unusual. Memory loss may be permanent or temporary, depending on the cause. It may also happen gradually or suddenly, without prior notice or symptoms. In some cases, memory loss is the inability to remember events that happened recently or events that happened in the past or a combination of both. Symptoms of memory loss include confusion, difficulty with reasoning, language and thought, headaches, nausea and dementia. This article we will talk about some common causes of memory loss.

Alcohol and Medications

Overindulging in alcohol can interfere with a person’s memory both long and short term. Even after the effects of the alcohol have worn off, having too many drinks can do some damage to a person’s memory. Although the quantity consumed may differ per person, it is advisable to stick with the recommendations of having just 2 drinks per day for men or 1 per day for women [1].

Several drugs and medications can affect and tamper with a person’s memory. If you are experiencing memory loss, it could be a sign that some of your medication needs to be checked and adjusted.
