Depression Symptoms and Warning Signs

Loss of Interest

Depression can make an individual lose interest in previous hobbies or activities. Examples include playing a sport, hanging out with friends and families, or reading. The state of individuals losing interest in previous hobbies is called Anhedonia. There are two major types of anhedonia, which are social and physical anhedonia.

Social anhedonia deals with the loss of interest in social gatherings or interactions like hangouts. Physical anhedonia means the inability to feel tactile pleasures like sex, touching, and eating. Some of the common anhedonia symptoms include lack of relationships or withdrawal from previous ones, negative feelings towards others, and social withdrawal.

Loss of interest doesn’t always occur in depressed individuals. However, it’s common among people with mental illness. Doctors usually prescribe antipsychotics or antidepressants to treat the condition when it’s due to depression.
