Depression Symptoms and Warning Signs

Irritability or Anger

There’s a possibility for depressed individuals to feel restless, violent, or agitated. When a person experiences anger or irritability due to depression, it is called an agitated depression or mixed mania. This condition can cause symptoms like a feeling of emptiness or insomnia. Some other common symptoms of agitated depression are fidgeting, nail-biting, picking at skin, and pacing.

Note that individuals with this condition are prone to self-injury or suicidal thoughts or attempts. Agitated depression can be linked to certain causes, including long-term stress, hypothyroidism, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorder, hormone imbalances, and traumatic events.

Therapists usually diagnose depression due to irritability or anger by observing mannerisms and mood. Doctors also often order blood tests to rule out the other possible causes of irritability. Treatment of agitated depression includes the use of medications or electroconvulsive therapy in extreme cases.
