What Is Bipolar Disorder With Mixed Episodes?

What is mixed-state bipolar?

Mixed state bipolar, also known as bipolar with mixed states are archaic terms formerly used to specify type of disorder you’re experiencing. It acts as a specifier and describes the characteristics of mental health conditions, such as mood disorders.

In 2013, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) was produced and the specifier changed from “mixed state” to “mixed features”

Studies show that people with bipolar disorder with mixed features usually experience symptoms of both depressive episodes and manic. That is, you can have a depressive episode with mixed characteristics, where the major symptoms are depressive. You must also have subclinical manic symptoms. In some cases, you may experience depression and also have rapid speech or racing thoughts.

You can also have a manic episode with mixed episodes, where the main symptoms are linked with those of a manic episode, but depressive symptoms are also manifested. In some cases, you may feel depressed even after engaging in several high-energy activities.
