Verapamil is available in many dosage forms and strength in the brand and generic. Brand names include calan, calan SR, verelan, and verelan PM. It comes in immediate release, extended release, and delayed release in capsule and tablet forms. The way to use verapamil depends on the following factors:

  • The reason for its consumption
  • Any underlying health conditions that may be present
  • Other drugs being used
  • Age of the patient

Doctors mainly start on the lowest dose to provide maximum benefits with little or no risk. The extended release form of Verapamil can be used with or without a meal. It is important for patients not to chew, split or break the extended release form of the capsules. In migraine prevention dose is not constant. Doses may range from 120mg to 480mg. Doctors will start on the lowest effective dose to prevent migraines and elevate the dose gradually as needed till the pain reduces.

Verapamil takes several days before it begins to work, so patients should be patient with the treatment plan.
