Verapamil for Migraine Prevention – What You Need to Know

Contraindications

Verapamil is not usually the safest or best medication for migraine prevention. There are underlying medical conditions that exacerbate in the presence of verapamil. These medical conditions include:

  • Hypotension (low blood pressure)
  • Sick sinus syndrome. an exception is when a pacemaker is available
  • Atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation [4]
  • Second- or third-degree heart block (except there is a pacemaker in place)

Medical doctors are always careful before prescribing these drugs to pregnant and lactating women. Women who are pregnant should take this drug only if the potential positive effects are more than the potential negative effects on the baby. Drinking alcohol with verapamil can also elevate the side effects of the medication and the effects of alcohol in the body. Verapamil has the tendency to increase liver enzyme levels.
