What Is An Ophthalmoplegic Migraine?

Treatment for RPON

RPON episodes may resolve on their own. If it persists, then treatment would be required. There are some available options to help manage and prevent RPON symptoms.

The exact treatment prescribed would depend on the person’s overall health and how they respond to treatment.

For example, IV steroids [6] such as prednisone may help some people, but provide no relief for others. You should work with your doctor to determine the most suitable treatment for you.

Some treatment options include:

  • Pain medication: Examples include opioids and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) [7]
  • Medication to relieve muscle spasms on the affected side of the body
  • Medication to manage nausea
  • Botox injections
  • Nerve pain medication, such as pregabalin (Lyrica)
  • Medication for blood pressure

People should also try to identify and avoid things that trigger episodes such as stress and fatigue.
