Hole in Gums – Causes, Symptoms, Treatments & More

Necrotizing periodontal disease

This is a rare form of gum disease. It typically comes on suddenly and is associated with tissue death (necrosis). It’s more common in people that have weakened immune systems.

In necrotizing periodontal disease, gum tissue can appear cratered or punched out. Painful ulcers may also appear. Necrotic areas can also be covered by something called a pseudomembrane, which is white or yellow in color.

Additional symptoms include:

  • severe pain
  • spontaneous bleeding
  • bad breath
  • receding gums
  • swollen lymph nodes
  • fever

Where in your gums do holes appear?

The part of your gum in which you have a hole depends on what is causing it. Different causes attack different areas of the gum. For example, an open tooth socket is found at the site of extraction.

In periodontitis and necrotizing periodontal disease [6], the holes or pockets typically occur in the general area where the gums meet the teeth.

Meanwhile, with infections, the holes may appear in any area on the gums.
