Oral thrush is a yeast infection of the mouth, throat, and esophagus. It is also known as oral candidiasis. Oral thrush happens when Candida Albicans fungus builds up in the mouth, usually resulting from the immune system being weak and unable to fight it. Oral thrush may occur in anyone but is more common amongst babies and older adults because they are more exposed to it and may also not have the required robust immune system to fight it. Oral thrush in newborns and infants is sometimes familiar and usually not harmful.
