Loss of Taste: Causes and Treatments

Medication

Some drugs can change the taste buds and alter the perception of taste. The most common drugs responsible for loss of taste are angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors. These drugs are also used to treat elevated blood pressure. Several drugs are responsible for dry mouth which leads to loss of sensitivity in taste buds. These drugs make identification of taste chemicals difficult for taste buds. Examples of medications that causes dry mouth are; antibiotics, antidepressants, antihistamines, thyroid medications, diuretics, antipsychotics, CNS medications [6], muscle relaxants [7], anti-inflammatories and antifungals. These drugs should be taking moderately and patients should report immediately to their doctors if they notice any signs of inability to taste food.
