Perioral Dermatitis Treatment, Causes, and Natural Remedies

Ways to prevent Perioral dermatitis

The cause of Perioral dermatitis is still unknown, which makes it difficult for one to know how to prevent it. The risk factors are also known to vary for different people. However, you can still do some things to help alleviate it or keep your condition from getting worse. Some steps to take that can help prevent perioral dermatitis include:

Do not use topical steroids

It’ll help if you avoid using steroid creams and ointments, not just on your face but on your entire body, unless specifically directed by your dermatologist. If another medical practitioner prescribes it for you, ensure you inform them that you have had Perioral dermatitis in the past. Perioral dermatitis is more likely to occur with strong topical steroids. If you must use one, a weaker one is more recommended.

Use cosmetics with caution.

Avoid or reduce the use of heavy cosmetics and skin creams. You can consult with your dermatologist on which moisturizer is best for your skin. Try switching brands of cosmetics and products to a lighter one if you decide to continue using cosmetics. Use gentle cleansers and moisturizers. Also, gently scrub your body why you bathe, do not use coarse sponges as they can be harmful to the skin.

Protect your skin

Be more deliberate about protecting your skin from harmful elements, such as rays from the sun (ultraviolet rays), UV, heat, and wind. These elements can worsen Perioral dermatitis. You would also need to be careful with the medications you use, as some medicines used to treat perioral dermatitis can make the skin sensitive to the sun. Ensure you protect your skin if you are in the sun for an extended period, you can make use of an umbrella or a recommended sunscreen.
