How to know an infected lip scab

The presence of this crusty layer on the lip is temporary and is not life threatening. However, in other to prevent the scab from being infected and causing harm to the other part of the body, certain signs should be treated immediately if noticed:

  • The presence of pus in the scab.
  • An infected scab is painful.
  • Feeling feverish when the scab is infected.
  • Hotness of the scab.
  • Swelling and Redness that continues after a long period.
  • An infected scab brings out blood when touched.
  • A yellow appearance.
  • Not healing after 2 weeks.
  • An infected scab has red streaks protruding.

The above signs are noticed when there is an infection in the scab. These infections may be bacterial,viral or caused by fungi. However,if any of these symptoms are noticed,it is important to go for a medical checkup and get appropriate treatment. If left untreated, there is a possibility of the infection leading to lip cancer. Lip cancer is curable only when detected early.
