Common Facts about Mitochondrial Dysfunction

Diagnosis

It can be hard to diagnose mitochondrial dysfunctional. This is because the condition affects different tissues and organs in the body, thus leading to various symptoms. Currently, no single diagnostic or lab test can verify the condition. Instead, a series of exams and tests might need, including:

– A review of your family history and medical history

– A complete physical exam

– A neurological exam

– A metabolic exam, including a cerebral spinal fluid test, urine test, and blood test

Depending on the affected areas and symptoms, some other diagnostic tests include genetic DNA testing, auditory-brainstem evoked responses, electrocardiogram, retinal exam, or MRI. Biochemical testing is a more advanced procedure to look for any chemical changes in the body involved in the production of energy. Biopsies of muscle and skin tissue might be performed as well. [6]
