What Causes Muscular Dystrophy (MD)?

Inheriting Muscular Dystrophy

Every person possesses two sets of every gene (except for the X and Y chromosomes). You get a copy from one parent and the other copy from the other parent. If any of your parents have an altered gene that leads to muscular dystrophy, then it can be transferred to you.

It can be inherited in several forms depending on the type of muscular dystrophy:

  1. Dominantly inherited disorder
  2. Recessive inherited disorder
  3. Sex-linked (X-linked) disorder

In some cases, the genetic alteration that leads to muscular dystrophy can also form a new event in the family. This is referred to as a spontaneous mutation.

A dominantly inherited disorder means people can inherit the altered gene if only one parent is affected. This means that if an affected partner marries an affected partner, there is still a 50 percent chance of their child developing the condition.

There are several Kinds of MD inherited in this manner such as myotonic dystrophy [1], facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy, oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy, and some types of limb-girdle MD [2].
