Dopamine and Parkinson Disease- What to Know

Treatment for Parkinson disease

There is no particular cure or treatment for Parkinson disease yet, but there are specific treatments that help to ease the symptoms, these treatments include:

  • Therapy: there are different therapies that can be used to ease this health condition. Speech therapy, physical therapy and occupational therapy help to improve communication and self-care of a patient with this illness. Alongside these therapies, a proper well balanced diet should be followed and regular exercises should be done.
  • Surgery: this becomes an option when all drugs are no longer effective. There are two types of therapies used for treatment of this illness and they are deep brain stimulation and pump-delivered therapy. Deep brain stimulation involves placing electrodes in the brain that reduce many symptoms of the disease.
  • Medications: when the symptoms begin to arise and become noticeable, it is then advised to visit the doctor for proper diagnosis and for proper drug prescription based on how serious the case may be. These drugs are levodopa, dopamine agonists, Catechol O-methylytransferase (COMT) inhibitors, amantadine (symmetrel) and anticholinergic.
