Symptoms

If you have essential tremor, you will experience small but rapid tremors that:

  • Occurs during actions
  • Tends to affects both sides of the body
  • Is more severe on one side of the body
  • Gets worse when one is stressed, tired, or having strong emotions
  • Predominantly affect your hands and arms
  • Makes it difficult to engage in fine motor movement, such as holding a toothbrush or utensils

Diagnosis

Essential tremor diagnosis is made clinically. Your doctor would need to examine your medical history, the symptoms you are experiencing, and then he will conduct a physical exam. The physical exam is to check for signs of essential tremors. There is no single test that can be used to make a diagnosis.

However, some tests may be done to rule out the possibility of other conditions. Example of such test include:

  • Imaging test
  • Blood test
  • Urine test
  • Neurological exam
