Essential Tremor and Parkinson’s Disease: How They Differ

What is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive health issue that causes trouble with movement. It is caused by the death of cells in a part of the brain called the substantia nigra. This is the part of the brain that produces the neurotransmitter dopamine.

Some cases of Parkinson’s have been traced to some specific genetic mutation. But more often it seems to appear randomly. It is thought that there may also be a link between Parkinson’s disease and some environmental factors, such as herbicides, pesticides, or air pollution, but more research is needed to understand the link.

The National Institute on aging [2] confirms that Parkinson’s is most common among older people, especially people above the age of 60, and affects men about 50 percent more often than women.
