Is Parkinson’s Disease Hereditary?

Changes That Are Not Hereditary

Not all genetic changes are hereditary, some genetic changes can result from environmental factors. A person is not born with these; they develop during their life.

This type of change, known as epigenetic, may affect their risk of Parkinson’s.

Risk Factors for Parkinson’S

In most cases, the doctor is unable to trace the cause of the disease. But researchers have identified multiple risk factors that can increase your chances of getting this disease.

Some risk factors associated with Parkinson’s disease include:

  • Mutations in specific genes associated with Parkinson’s.
  • Having a family history of Parkinson’s or a first-degree family member with Parkinson’s.
  • Being older, especially above the age of 60.
  • Exposure to herbicides [3] and pesticides [4]
  • Being assigned male at birth.
  • History of brain injury.
