Schwannoma (Neurilemoma): What It Is, Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

What is a vestibular schwannoma

A form of schwannoma that arises from the balance and hearing nerves that supply your inner ear is called a vestibular schwannoma, also referred to as an acoustic neuroma. It typically grows slowly and is benign (noncancerous).

The hearing and balance nerves, however, are impacted as the tumor advances, typically leading to hearing loss, tinnitus (ear ringing), and vertigo [1] in the affected ear.

Is schwannoma a brain tumor?

It can be a brain tumor, but not always the case. A schwannoma can develop anywhere in the body, including the brain or head. This is due to the fact that schwannomas originate from Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system, which is made up of nerves in the brain and other parts of the body.

Vestibular schwannoma, the most prevalent type, is regarded as a brain tumor [2].
