Symptoms of Types of Peripheral Neuropathy

Symptoms associated with mononeuropathy

As previously stated, mononeuropathy involves damage to a single nerve trunk. A nerve trunk is bundle of nerves sheathed in a single connective tissue. Mononeuropathy is usually caused by a traumatic injury that directly affects the nerve. It may also be caused by prolonged pressure on the nerve, lack of use, overuse, or repetitive motions. Signs of mononeuropathy include [6]:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome, a common type of neuropathy that affects the wrists due to overuse, causing numbness, pain, and tingling sensations in the first three fingers of the hands
  • Numbness, pain, and tingling in one thigh known as meralgia paresthetica [7]
  • Numbness in the last two digits of the hand due to damage of the ulnar nerve at the elbow
  • Foot drop, which is caused by compression of the peroneal nerve at the top of the calf
  • Inability to control facial muscles on one side of the face known as Bell’s palsy [8]
