Symptoms associated with polyneuropathy

Most cases of peripheral neuropathy are polyneuropathies. Polyneuropathies occur when several nerves in various parts of the body are damaged. Unlike mononeuropathy, where physical damage is the most likely cause, chronic diseases and exposure to toxins are the more common causes of polyneuropathy.
The most common polyneuropathy symptoms [9] are:
- Tingling and numbness
- Burning sensation in the hands and feet
- Loss of feeling in the arms and legs
Polyneuropathy symptoms resemble those seen in the three main types of neuropathy discussed above. A peculiar type of polyneuropathy called Guillain-Barre syndrome [10] causes the immune system to attack and destroy nerves branching out the spinal cord. The symptoms develop rapidly and may cause paralysis. Symptoms include:
- Weakness and tingling in the arms
- Problems with heart rhythm and blood pressure regulation
- Difficulty breathing
Conclusion
People with peripheral neuropathy do not experience all of these symptoms. The symptoms each person experiences depend on the type and severity of their neuropathy. Research is still ongoing to understand the disease better but some cases can be treated.
