Treatment Options for Nerve Pain

Diagnosing Nerve Pain

If you suspect that you have nerve pain, you should immediately visit your doctor. Sometimes, the cause might be fairly clear, especially if you have already been diagnosed with health conditions known to cause nerve pain, like HIV [1], cancer [2], or diabetes [3].

In some other instances, it may be difficult to identify the root cause of your nerve pain. This is because there are several conditions that can trigger nerve pain, your doctor will need to run a number of lab tests in order to identify the cause. You’ll also need a thorough neurological exam, and possibly other tests — like CT scans, MRIs, nerve conduction studies and electromyography. Sometimes, a doctor will recommend a biopsy of the skin or a nerve to examine the nerve endings.
