Treatment Options for Nerve Pain

Treatment for Nerve pain

The secret to nerve pain treatment is to identify the underlying disease or condition that’s responsible for the pain and treat it, if possible.

Your doctor will first and foremost give you drugs to help relieve the pain and help you maintain typical capabilities despite the pain, and improve your quality of life.

The most common treatments for nerve pain include:

Over-the-counter pain medication

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) [4], such as Aleve and Motrin, are sometimes used to treat nerve pain.

However, this treatment does not target the source of the treatment, they are administered mostly to only relieve the pain for some time.

Prescription medication

Opioid pain medications are also for the purpose of reducing pain. Although it is not the most effective treatment, they don’t usually reduce neuropathic pain as well as they reduce other types of pain. Also, doctors are not quick to administer it because of the fear that one may become dependent.

Topical pain relievers [5] can be used, too. These include lidocaine patches, capsaicin patches, and prescription-strength ointments and creams.
