What is Parkinsonism?

Progressive supranuclear palsy

The progressive supranuclear palsy disorder is caused by damage to parts of the brain controlling the cranial nerves. Symptoms vary between people, but the first sign is usually loss of balance while walking. The progression of this condition is also faster than Parkinson’s disease.

Symptoms

  • Loss of balance
  • Abrupt and unexplained falls, including falling backward
  • May fall backward
  • Slow movement
  • Stuff and awkward gait
  • Alteration in mood
  • Slurred speech
  • Blurred vision and problem controlling eyes
  • Difficulty swallowing

Treatment

There’s currently no effective treatment for progressive supranuclear palsy, and it usually doesn’t respond to medication. Treatment revolves around targeted individual symptoms.
