Infantile parkinsonism-dystonia

Infantile parkinsonism-dystonia is a rare disorder, also referred to as dopamine transporter deficiency syndrome. It causes a progressive decline in involuntary muscle contractions and other symptoms that resemble those of Parkinson’s disease. It usually starts in infants.
Infantile parkinsonism-dystonia has no cure, and it’s caused by a mutation of the gene SLC6A3.
Symptoms
Common Symptoms include:
- Tremors
- Involuntary and long-lasting muscle contractions and cramps
- Difficulty with daily activities
- Muscle stiffness
- Difficulty with daily activities
- Impaired balance and coordination
Other symptoms can be present, like:
- Irritability
- Trouble sleeping
- Abnormal eye movement
- Reduced facial expression
- Recurrent pneumonia [7]
- Digestive problems
Treatment
Treatment would involve targeting each symptom to improve quality of life. Physical therapy and medications to control involuntary muscular contractions are also commonly administered.
