Osteoporosis vs Osteopenia: Facts to Know

Osteopenia Does Not Always Lead To Osteoporosis

Although people who develop osteoporosis often have osteopenia earlier in the course of their disease, not everyone who has osteopenia will go on to have osteoporosis. Bone loss tends to set in naturally as a person ages, but it does not affect everyone the same way.

Some people only experience enough bone loss to reach an osteopenia diagnosis, and the condition never progresses into osteoporosis. Others may, with dietary changes and intentional lifestyle choices, slow the rate of bone loss they experience. This can prevent them from eventually developing osteoporosis.
