Polio (Poliomyelitis): What Is It, Symptoms, Causes & Vaccine

Paralytic polio

Cases of polio rarely develop into paralytic polio. This is a more severe condition, it is when polio leads to paralysis [3] in the spinal cord [4], and this condition is also called Spinal polio, bulbar polio (brainstem polio), or both bulbospinal polio.

First, you experience non-paralytic polio symptoms, but after a week, more severe symptoms will appear. Some of these symptoms include:

  • Severe spasm and muscle pain
  • Loss of reflexes
  • Deformed Limbs, especially the Hips, ankles, and feet
  • Loose and floppy limbs, sometimes on just one side of the body
  • Sudden paralysis, temporary or permanent

Although it’s rare for full paralysis to occur, it does happen. Less than 1 percent of polio cases lead to full paralysis. The virus will attack the muscles that help you breathe and cause death in the most complicated cases. This happens to 5–10 percent of the polio paralysis cases.
