Polio (Poliomyelitis): What Is It, Symptoms, Causes & Vaccine

Symptoms of Polio (Poliomyelitis)

The study has shown that 95 percent of people who get infected with poliovirus are asymptomatic which means they do not show any symptoms. This is known as subclinical polio. Even if one shows no symptoms of the disease they can still spread the virus and cause infection in others.

The symptoms of Polio come in three stages of the disease. Non-paralytic polio, paralytic polio, and Post-polio syndrome.

Non-paralytic polio

This is usually the early stage of the disease. One may or may not experience any symptoms at this stage. The signs and symptoms of non-paralytic polio are usually flu-like and mostly last from one to 10 days. Some of these symptoms include:

  • Sore throat
  • Vomiting [1]
  • Nausea
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Fatigue [2]
  • Meningitis

This stage of polio is also known as abortive polio.
