Sarcoidosis: Diagnosis and Treatment

Treatment for Sarcoidosis

The usual goals of sarcoidosis treatment are to control symptoms and avoid organ damage. Since immune cells produce inflammation in granulomas, sarcoidosis is typically treated with immunosuppressive or immune-modifying drugs. Treatment is based on the location of granulomas in the body.

Sarcoidosis has no known cure, though it frequently resolves on its own. Sometimes there is no need to treat sarcoidosis right away if the symptoms are not severe or life-threatening. Instead, you and your healthcare professional will keep an eye on your symptoms.

Medications that help ease sarcoidosis include:

  • Corticosteroids [20]
  • Immunosuppressants [21]
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) [22]
  • Anti-tumor necrosis factor-alpha antibodies (anti-TNF-alpha antibodies)
