Causes and Risk Factors of Sepsis

Compromised Immune System

Individuals with an impaired immune system are more prone to contracting infections, which increases the risk of sepsis. In some cases, the illnesses contracted by those individuals could be more severe. A compromised immune system could be due to several reasons, including cancer treatments, splenectomy, and organ transplants.

Cancer treatments like chemotherapy can damage some of the body’s healthy cells, including those fighting infections. Some individuals with cancer and severe medical conditions require a stem cell transplant, which later makes it hard for the body to fight a specific illness.

The immune system is critical for the overall health of an individual. There are many medical conditions associated with immune system disorder. Some of the significant autoimmune conditions include type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus.
