Sepsis (Blood Infection): Common Facts to Know

Causes

Generally, sepsis is caused by an infection. Though any type of infection can result in sepsis, most septic cases are products of bacterial infection. Sometimes sepsis is caused indirectly by the invasion of bacteria due to a medical procedure. This includes the passage of bacteria through devices such as urinary catheters and IV lines, or perhaps through surgical wounds. Diseases which are more like to cause sepsis include:

  • Bloodstream infection by pathogens, for example, bacteria.
  • Infections of parts of the urinary system, from the kidney down to the bladder and urethra.
  • Gastrointestinal tract infection, for example, of organs like the stomach and colon.
  • Pneumonia [3]
