Risk Factors
Sepsis can happen in anybody, although some people run a higher risk of the disease. Such groups are discussed below:
- Pregnant women
- Elderly people (older than 65 years)
- The very young (especially younger than a year old)
- People with chronic cases of pre-existing medical conditions, such as lung disease, kidney disease, cancer, or diabetes.
- People with weakened immune systems
- People receiving treatment in a hospital, especially the intensive care unit.
- People who have use for invasive medical devices, such as breathing tubes or catheters.
- People without a spleen. [2]
