Causes of buttocks hyperpigmentation

There are different causes of this skin condition, it is important the causes and risk factors in order to avoid suffering hyperpigmentation on the buttocks, the causes include:

  • Tight clothing: this is one of the major causes of discoloration in the buttocks area. There is an increase in friction between our buttocks and tight underwear and pants which increases the darkening of the skin in that part of the body. This friction causes skin irritations and diseases that leave the area darker than normal.
  • Excessive sunlight: too much skin on the body causes excess production of melanin. Melanin is meant to protect the skin from damaging rays and acts as a natural sunscreen. However, excessive exposure to the sun may disrupt the work of melanin and then leads to hyperpigmentation.
  • Folliculitis [2]: this is the main and major cause of skin discoloration between the buttocks. This results from the infection of the hair follicles in the buttocks. It is characterized by white head pimples with small red bumps. It is mostly known as butt acne. These infections are caused by sweating and tight clothes.
  • Poor hygiene: accumulation of sweat from physical activities in the butt area is also a cause of this discoloration. Lack of proper cleaning and showering also causes dirt and dead skin to pile up and lead to hyperpigmentation.
  • Lack of blood circulation: lack of oxygenated blood makes the skin undergo certain discoloration. When blood is not circulated as it should, regeneration of skin cells becomes difficult, thereby making the skin look darker. Sitting for too long in a particular position also leads to improper blood circulation.
  • Bad skin products: some skin products do more harm than good. Bad products cause skin irritation and sometimes lead to excessive production of melanin. This overproduction thereby leads to hyperpigmentation. It is very normal to have a darker skin color in the buttocks area, therefore treatments are not too necessary. Dark areas that are noticed as a result of skin irritation or diseases tend to go away on their own after a long while.
