Common Symptoms of Spinal Stenosis

Foot Drop

Foot drop refers to difficulty lifting the front part of the foot. The symptoms may appear suddenly or develop slowly over time. If you have foot drop, you may drag the front of your foot on the ground while you walk, or find it difficult to stand or walk with the affected foot. This condition is generally caused by underlying diseases, such as spinal stenosis.

If the L4 and L5 nerve roots in your lower spine are compressed, you may experience motor weakness in your foot that manifests as foot drop [5]. Foot drop caused by spinal stenosis generally causes difficulty controlling the foot and may cause affected people to drag their feet and trip often as they walk. If the S1 nerve root is affected, you may experience difficulty walking on your tiptoes.
