Jaundice

Jaundice is a disease that causes yellow pigmentation on the skin. It is a hereditary Spherocytosis and it makes red blood cells smaller and more fragile than usual. These fragile cells are less flexible than healthy cells and get trapped in blood passages. Most times, these passages are in the spleen and these cells are destroyed when they are forced through the passages leading to hemolytic anemia. This clog in the spleen causes it to enlarge and produce bilirubin due to the rapid destruction of these cells. Bilirubin [6] is the substance that causes the yellow pigmentation on the skin. Excess bilirubin could cause the development of gall stones if the jaundice is left untreated.
