10 GERD(Acid Reflux, Heartburn) Treatments

Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease is one of the most common gastrointestinal problems in the world. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive Kidney diseases estimates that around 20 percent of people in the United States suffer from GERD. [1]

The condition is characterized by acid reflux and a painful burning sensation in the chest (called heartburn) caused by the reflux. It can result in damage to the gastrointestinal tract and other complications if left untreated.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice can help in the treatment of GERD symptoms. Besides being packed with a lot of nutrients beneficial to the body, lemon can help naturally regulate acid levels in the stomach. This can also help to limit the pain caused by GERD.

Drink a cup of lemon juice every morning and you should notice improvements in your condition. [2] This juice works best when it is taken on an empty stomach about 20 minutes before you eat.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a part of many folk and home remedies. This is because vinegar contains a lot of antioxidants and nutrients that help maintain good health. Apple cider vinegar is made by adding yeast to crushed apples and treating them with bacteria. It has a pungent taste.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that apple cider vinegar may help treat some digestive problems, including GERD. [3] It is not clear how this works and scientific evidence of its efficacy is limited.

If you want to try apple cider vinegar as a remedy for your GERD symptoms, ensure you dilute it with enough water or limit your consumption to only one tablespoon or less a day.
