6 Common Symptoms of Stomach Flu(Gastroenteritis)

Watery diarrhea

Watery diarrhea [1] is possibly the most common sign of stomach flu. It is marked by frequent bowel movements that often occur suddenly and may happen multiple times in one day. If you have only one incidence of watery stool, it is not considered diarrhea. This symptom can be very uncomfortable and interfere with your plans. It usually begins within the first three days of the infection behind your stomach flu. In most people, this diarrhea begins within 12 to 48 hours.

Diarrhea caused by stomach flu may be mild or severe. Frequent watery bowel movements can make you lose plenty of body fluid and become dehydrated. You can counter this by staying rehydrated and taking valuable electrolytes. The symptoms typically last three to seven days. You may use medication to clear the infection out faster or antidiarrheal drugs to control this symptom. Speak to your doctor before using antidiarrheal medication. Do not give antidiarrheal drugs to children under five [2].

Diarrhea associated with stomach flu is typically bloodless. If you notice blood in your stool, it is likely a symptom of something else. You should see a doctor immediately. It could be a sign of internal bleeding or other potentially life-threatening conditions.
