Abdominal Pain: Causes, Self-Care and Treatments

When to Seek Medical Attention for Abdominal Pain

Untreated mild stomach pain might go away. For instance, if gas or bloating is the cause of your abdominal pain, it may only need to pass.

However, in some instances, abdominal pain might need a visit to the doctor. If you have significant abdominal pain that is related to trauma (from an accident or injury) or pressure or pain in your chest, dial 911 right away.

If the pain is so intense that you can’t sit still or have to curl up into a ball to be comfortable, or if you experience any of the following, you should visit a doctor right away:

  • soiled stools
  • higher than 101°F (38.33°C) fever
  • Hematemesis
  • prolonged dizziness or nausea
