Esophagitis – Types, Symptoms, Risk Factors, Treatment and More

Symptoms of Esophagitis

The symptoms of esophagitis can vary from mild to severe. Some common include difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), pain when you swallow (odynophagia), sore throat, hoarse voice, heartburn, acid reflux, chest pain (worse with eating), nausea [7], vomiting, epigastric abdominal pain, decrease in appetite and cough.

Young children may have difficulty ingesting food. You should immediately contact your doctor if you or your child experience severe symptoms such as shortness of breath or chest pain, especially if it does not occur while eating.

You should also contact your doctor if your symptoms continue for more than a few days and if they are severe enough to interfere with your ability to eat properly. Such symptoms include headache, muscle aches, or fever.

Conditions that requires immediate medical attention include:

  • Chest pain that lasts more than a few hours, especially if you have a history of heart problems, elevated blood pressure, or diabetes.
  • If you think you have food stuck in your esophagus.
  • If you can’t consume even small sips of water.
