Certain Diseases and Medications

Many diseases with connection to the gut, such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, and irritable bowel syndrome, have a way of causing bloating. When the gastrointestinal tract lining is irritated in some cases, it might cause distention that mimics bloating. Drugs, too, can cause you to feel bloated. The best known in this category are drugs used in the treatment of acid reflux. There are many others out there — for example, some drugs used in softening stool can cause bloating. Birth control pills have a side effect of distending parts of the abdomen and making the woman bloated. Some anti-diarrheal medications may contribute to bloating in the same way aspirin and antacids can.
