Heat Stroke – Complications, Symptoms, Treatment and More

When Should You Visit Your Doctor and How to Prevent Heatstroke?

If you have a history of heatstroke and are recovering, visit your healthcare provider immediately if you notice any of these:

  • Cognitive dysfunction (problems thinking or remembering)
  • Low urine output
  • Liver or kidney problems
  • Difficulty breathing

You can prevent heatstroke by:

  • Not leaving children (or pets) in closed, hot spaces such as cars.
  • Not engaging in tedious physical activity in hot, humid conditions.
  • Consuming sports drinks lightly salted water or broth.
  • Wearing loose-fitting, light-coloured, and lightweight clothing if you’ll be out in the heat.
  • Gradually allow your body to get used to warm temperatures over several weeks if you’ll have to be in hot conditions for work or sports.
  • Staying in air-conditioned or well-ventilated areas during heat waves.
