Risks and complications

If left untreated, peroneal tendonitis can progress to a tendon rupture. This occurs if your tendon partially or completely tears. Damaged or weakened tendons can also lead to subluxation, which dislocates the tendons. Ruptures or subluxation can cause:
-
Intense pain on the outside region of your ankle
-
Ankle weakness or instability
-
Sharp, snapping feeling in your tendons
Having an ankle surgery on the affected part comes with some risks, such as:
-
Infection
-
Bleeding
-
Blood clots
-
Scar tissue formation
-
Nerve damage
-
Recurring tendonitis or ankle pain
