Peroneal Tendonitis: Causes Symptoms, Treatment, Prevention

Risks and complications

If left untreated, peroneal tendonitis can progress to a tendon rupture. This occurs if your tendon partially or completely tears. Damaged or weakened tendons can also lead to subluxation, which dislocates the tendons. Ruptures or subluxation can cause:

  • Intense pain on the outside region of your ankle
  • Ankle weakness or instability
  • Sharp, snapping feeling in your tendons

Having an ankle surgery on the affected part comes with some risks, such as:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Blood clots
  • Scar tissue formation
  • Nerve damage
  • Recurring tendonitis or ankle pain
