Antineoplastic Chemotherapy – An Overview

Plant alkaloids

These drugs are also effective in treating cancer. They work by retaining enzymes that cancer cells need, thereby keeping cancer cells from growing. They are used for breast cancer, lymphoma, some leukemias, lung cancer, ovarian cancer, and multiple myeloma.

Antimetabolites

Antimetabolites work by binding to the molecules that make up DNA and RNA in the cancer cells to keep them from replicating. They are used to treat leukemia, colon cancer, breast cancer, and ovarian cancer.

Hormonal and Miscellaneous agents

Hormonal agents are used to treat cancers that are sensitive to the hormones, such as prostate cancer, breast cancer, thyroid cancer, and uterine cancer. Miscellaneous agents refer to other antineoplastic drugs that also help kill cancer cells but do not fit in any of these categories.
