Brachytherapy for Prostate Cancer

Procedure

Spinal anesthesia or general anesthesia must be administered before the brachytherapy procedure begins to numb your lower body. Your doctor may also give you general anesthesia to make you sleep throughout the procedure. You will remain in the hospital after the procedure for some hours or overnight to ensure proper evaluation by your doctors.

During the brachytherapy procedure, your doctor will use a needle to put small tubes, known as catheters into the prostate. A needle will be inserted through the region between the anus and scrotum.

After the insertion of a needle, the procedure for the two forms of brachytherapy starts to look different from each other. The high-dose therapy is a short-term treatment that lasts for a few days. On the other hand, low-dose therapy is a long-term treatment that lasts for weeks or months.

Let’s take a look at a more detailed explanation of the two therapies.
