Throwing up Blood after Drinking

Possible Causes of Throwing up Blood after Drinking

Swallowing Blood

A nosebleed and other minor injuries would cause you to swallow blood. After drinking too much alcohol, the sign can be too subtle that you would not be aware of having a nosebleed or swallowing the blood until you throw up the blood. Depending on your age, the blood could look different. Fresh blood tends to be red and might streak the vomit, while older blood tends to be browner and looks quite like coffee grounds. [2]

Throat Irritation

Alcoholic drinks could dry out your throat. With excessive consumption, this dryness could easily irritate the tissues in the throat and lead to tiny tears, which bleed and cause bloody streaks when you vomit after drinking. The contents of the vomit would burn or irritate the throat as well. The same holds true for forceful coughing. In these cases, the throat might look red and feel scratchy and raw. In addition to alcohol, smoking can also increase the risk of throat dryness. [3]
