In some cases, women notice that their appetite increases as soon as the first trimester of pregnancy. However, most women experience a shift in their appetite during the second trimester, around when the morning sickness ends.

It is normal to feel hungrier at any period of the day, but it is common in the middle of the night and early in the morning. Because, the blood sugar reduces overnight with a longer period between meals. Your increased appetite is due to the developing fetus requiring more nourishment.

In the second trimester, you will need to begin gaining weight to meet your baby’s needs. Women who started pregnancy at a normal weight will have a total of about 12 to 14 pounds added in the second trimester and 8 to 10 pounds in the third trimester. To support your weight gain and developing baby, your body requires about an additional 300 to 350 calories per day in the second trimester and 500 calories in the third trimester that what you were consuming before you conceived.
