Catamenial (Menstrual-Linked) Epilepsy Overview

Diagnosis of Catamenial Epilepsy

First, your doctor will request your medical history, after which several other tests may be done to diagnose catamenial epilepsy; these tests include:

  • Electroencephalogram (EEG): This test is done to measure the brain’s electrical activity. It will enable the doctor to identify irregular patterns.
  • CT or MRI scans: These are imaging scans done to show images of your brain. This will help identify the part of your brain the seizure is happening.
  • Seizure and period log: Close study of your condition will help determine if your seizures are related to your menstrual cycle.
  • Temperature log: Your doctor will record your body temperature to find patterns between seizures and periods.
