How to Tell If Your Water Broke (or if you just peed)

Other factors

The above tips should give you an idea of what the fluid is. But if you are still not sure, here are two other methods to help you decide if it is urine or amniotic fluid.

When you have fluid release, try performing a few Kegels exercises [6]. If the trickle feeling doesn’t stop after a short while, you are most likely dealing with broken water.

Put on clean and dry underwear, add a panty liner, and lie down for about half an hour. It is most likely amniotic fluid if you feel the fluid pooling in your vagina or a larger gush when you stand up after.

Contact your doctor immediately if you are not already in labor.

What to do and not to do if it is amniotic fluid

  • Take note of the time and period you first felt the wetness, including the color.
  • Immediately get what you need to take to the hospital and get ready to leave or immediately contact your midwife.
  • Absorb the wetness with panty liners.
  • Contact your doctor to discuss your options.
  • If your amniotic sac has ruptured, do not use tampons, have sex, or take a bath to avoid Infection.

Your doctor may want to conduct a vaginal exam after your water has broken. Discuss your options with your health care provider.
