How to Tell If Your Water Broke (or if you just peed)

Color of the fluid

If the fluid is yellowish, then it is most likely urine. This is normal and results from the pressure the baby’s head is putting on the bladder.

If the fluid appears clear to white and a bit creamy, it is most likely vaginal discharge. A vaginal discharge [5] will feel watery when it’s coming out but will appear thicker inconsistently when it gathers.

It might be amniotic fluid when the liquid is clear or much paler than urine and completely liquid. To confirm, ensure you check with your OB or midwife.

If the liquid is green-yellow color, your amniotic fluid has been colored by meconium. This is usually a result of your baby’s bowel movement. You should inform your OB or midwife about it as it might affect steps to take during delivery to ensure your baby’s safety.

Odor if the fluid

You can tell if it is urine or amniotic fluid from the smell. Unlike urine, which has an acidic smell that you are familiar with, the amniotic liquid is odorless or has a slightly sweet odor.

To be sure, you should contact your doctor immediately.
